From the Louis Hemon novel "M. Ripois and His Nemesis" about Andre Ripois, a philanderer in pursuit of love and riches from Paris to London. Andre is breaking up with his wife, Catherine, over his attentions to her best friend Patricia. While Catherine is out arranging the divorce, Andre, just to keep in practice, hits on the girl upstairs, Diana and then turns his attention back to Patricia, who he tricks into having dinner at his flat on the pretext that Catherine will be there. When he cannot make any progress with her via his usual tactics, he tries to arouse her pity be telling her of his past. In his early, impoverished days in London, he made love to his boss Anne but her dreadful cooking drove him away. Next came Norah who he picked up on a bus and took to his flat and told her about his make-believe inheritance, but she insisted on marriage first, which was not in his plans. Marcelle, a French woman living in Soho, put him on his feet with money, and he repaid her by stealing...

Gerard Philippe tells the amusing story of his seductions

"Monsieur Ripois" is a very well-done satiric and ironic comedy, told mostly in flashbacks with voice overs by Gerard Philippe. He plays a young man who seduces one woman after another, his attractions coming from the chase.

There is no sex and no nudity shown in this picture.

The satire is of women's wants and weaknesses and how Philippe goes about lying to them and otherwise overcoming their inhibitions, which make little sense to him. The satire is of how society has bred in these inhibitions so as to encourage marriage and a stable family life. Philippe even succumbs to marriage.

The irony is mainly at Philippe's own expense and clumsiness.

The women that Philippe goes after are a cross-section of classes and types. There is his boss in one job, a woman who lives with her family and wants furniture and all the trappings, an upper-class woman with money, a very beautiful woman to whom he tells his story in his effort to seduce her and prove his true love, a prostitute who takes him in when he is penniless and hungry, and an odd bird or two on the side.

Poor Philippe! All he wants is to go to bed with these damsels and he can't understand why they want more than that!

This is not a laugh out loud comedy, but more on the droll side.
