About that first Bardem

In 1953 Juan Antonio Bardem shot his first movie -alone, that is-. He decided to pay homage to his parents -both of them actors-. But beyond this personal streak, "Cómicos" is a film that deserves to be seen nowadays. This is Bardem before his Antonioni's usual copies. And at his most sincere. You have to watch the shots of those thespians working day and night in that 50's Spain to sympathize with them. On the other hand, Ana Ruiz is not only a character but an idea: the idea of the "dirty hope" as she calls it. She waits for a break because she know she's worth as an actress. No matter when the moment will arrive. Unfortunately for her that moment comes and goes very quickly. But now she's had the opportunity to know that she was right. As for the actors, the Argentinian actress Christian Galvé -Elisa Christian Galvé- is a wonderful image- and Fernando Rey, Ema Penella and Carlos Casavilla are no less than perfect. A light, entertaining, good-hearted romp

Highly amusing! Daisy the alligator steals the show, and is forever popping up when least expected. A light, entertaining, good hearted romp with Diana Dors in typical form. Perhaps my favourite film featuring an alligator even though in some scenes it's obvious the leading lady is rubber ! But this only adds to the film's appeal.

Review :

An enjoyable movie

Excellent and a bit different action type story line. Great mix, of old world, upper echelon Mississippi River gambling life. Also the rift between "commoners" and the "rich elite" who like to make believe they don't have all the same feelings and faults like us average folk. It has a good supporting cast as well. Tyrone Power was a bit older by this move but we all age and he still looks darn good. He also is still a fine actor and personality and can command the screen too. It's has some excellent sword play and it also provides a bit of a real fencing education. Besides all that it's in color and It's got Julie Adams and Piper Laurie too!

The White Angel

I'd already had my fill of Matarazzo, but I watched this one -- a sequel to NOBODY'S CHILDREN -- just out of obligation to finish what I started. But this one was a step up. It picks up where its predecessor left off, and piles on a whole new series of tragedies, including an almost hilariously cruel boating accident. Things get even weirder when Sanson appears as a doppelganger character, and Nazzari gets obsessed with her, VERTIGO-style (and takes the opportunity to impregnate her for the third time in as many movies). Where this film surpasses Matarazzo's previous works is in the more heightened cinematic stylization and a somewhat deeper exploration of character psychology. There are actually some really good scenes here. It's still pretty soapy, and there are a few dull spots, but overall this is a "high 7" as opposed to the "low 7" for the NOBODY'S CHILDREN and TORMENTO.

Peggy Cummins in British comedy about con-artists on the Riviera...

This is a hidden gem, as someone else commented, and deserves watching. It's a spry comedy about a father and daughter (RONALD SQUIRE and PEGGY CUMMINS) who bilk hotel people out of money with a simple swindle that works every time--with Squire posing as the husband who deserts his wife.

Along comes an honest man (TERENCE MORGAN) who knows nothing about Cummins' background before he falls in love with her. Even when she tells him she's not really the girl he should be chasing, he won't be dissuaded. The plot goes on to include an overly amorous hotel manager, a double cross that's repeated several times and finally, a double double cross that one suspects is coming all along involving a wealthy man who keeps a closet full of currency.

It's highly amusing without resorting to the sort of over-the-top British humor that was more fashionable during the '60s. Here the approach is more subtle and manages to be just as entertaining, due to some charming performances from the cast.

Summing up: Nice to see Cummins having a good time in a comedy and looking so beautiful. Terence Morgan does equally well as the light comedy romantic lead. RONALD SQUIRE is amusing in a role vastly different from the kind he usually played in films like MY COUSIN RACHEL, where he assumed a more serious and sober side of his nature.

Very poor Western in every way. Big waste of time.

I see that there are no reviews here so I'll add my two-cents. This was a very poor Western in just about every way. It deserves its 5.0 rating average. I usually like the stars, Jock Mahoney and Peggie Castle. Here they were attractive, anyway. Everything else about the film was cheap, unrealistic, actually embarrassing. Mahoney is known as a stunt man early in his career; here his fistfights were awkwardly staged acrobatic doings. Westerns that have battle-winning ploys at the end of throwing sticks of dynamite or lighting brush fires are a sure sign of a ludicrous movie, and the former was used here. The basic story (the bad guy's plot)seemed pretty thin and unworkable to me.

Sad story of a waif, Gelsomina, who is sold by her mother to Zampano for 10,000 lire and a few kilos of food. Zampano is a traveling showman who exhibits feats of strength by breaking a chain wrapped around his chest. He performs in village squares and then passes the hat for whatever the normally small crowd is prepared to give. He teaches Gelsomina a drum roll as part of his introduction. He doesn't treat her well and when she tries to run away, he beats her. They eventually join a small traveling circus where they meet Il Matto but a disagreement leads to tragedy. Zampano eventually abandons the girl and it's only many years later that he learns of her fate.

To film as Bach is to music

La Strada brings two souls together to tell a story that ultimately displays humanity's finer aspects. The title gives a clue to the meaning of Fellini's masterpiece: The Way. The brute, Zampano, buys the urchin-like Gelsomina to be his traveling companion in his one-man carnival act. He is physically and emotionally cruel to her. Her longing to love and be loved, and her child-like, yet acute perception of life, and desire to live it, despite hardships, makes her the perfect complement to the selfish and despicable Zampano. Their unification affects each other. However, although Zampano's harshness adversely effects Gelsomina's life, it is her influence that will eventually, and more significantly, change him. This may sound like the familiar Beauty and the Beast fairy tale, but it is more than a love story. It is about love, but it isn't until the very end of the film that we realize it. More than love, it is about a man who gains insight and awareness because of love. It is his finale transformation that demonstrates both the frailty and vitality of the human condition. It overpoweringly suggests that the individual, no matter how depraved, is able to spiritually evolve.

Every frame and scene in this masterpiece has purpose and meaning.

Great Atmosphere and Look but the Story Just Doesn't Work

The Maze (1953)

When her fiancé Gerald (Richard Carlson) leaves before their wedding with no real answer, Kitty (Veronica Hurst) and her aunt (Katherine Emery) follow him to his family's estate in Scotland. Once there the women discover that Gerald has aged for some reason and soon they realize that there's even more family secrets. THE MAZE is a hard film to judge because it contains some very good stuff but the problem is that the story itself is just boring and really drawn out for no good reason. The film features some terrific performances as well as a haunting atmosphere and these here make it worth sitting through. Director William Cameron Menzies (INVADERS FROM MARS) does a wonderful job building up the creepy atmosphere of the old castle. From the opening shots of the fog thick outside to the staircase with all the spider webs. The director really makes one believe you're in this location and he also puts the maze (much like the one later seen in THE SHINING) to good use. He also handles the B&W cinematography very well as the film looks terrific and the use of shadows is well done. Carlson turns in a good performance in the lead and I though both Hurst and Emery were good. The supporting players are good as well so with all of this what's the problem? The screenplay is incredibly weak and it just doesn't go anywhere. Gerald asks the women to leave. They tell a lie to where they can stay an extra day. They discuss what could possibly be happened. These three steps repeat themselves over and over and it's just really boring. I won't give away the secret but when it's finally revealed you really can't help but laugh. The effect of this reveal is also rather laughable. The film was originally shot in 3-D but watching the standard version I really didn't see anything that would really jump out. THE MAZE is an interesting film with a lot going for it but sadly most of the good stuff was just wasted.

High school doldrums and awakenings.

Italian high school, or its equivalent. Third of five years. Boys and girls go to classes, don't pay attention to the teachers, who are universally boring…with an occasional exception. The administration looks unkindly upon a student publication. Romances are started. Romances are ended. There are petty jealousies. One girl, Giovanna, gets pregnant by Franco. There are ski trips, basketball games (including one with girls in shorts that piqued the ire of 1953 Italian censors, along with the adolescent kissing!). Mothers and fathers are often not an understanding lot, and at times they are very understanding. Teachers are harsh and prone to humiliating sarcasm…occasionally they are humane.

This film, directed by Luciano Emmer, who has contributed a good number of better films to the Italian cinema, treats so many characters here so schematically that it is really difficult to relate emotionally to many of them. The movie reminded me of Leonide Moguy's TOMORROW IS TOO LATE, which dealt with some of the same issues of youthful sexual awakening and romance, but in a way that was more incisive and certainly more memorable. There is a particularly good scene of phone-rage in which one set of parents argues loudly with another set. The parents of Bruno and Camilla each blame the other for their kids' problems and hang-ups that distract them from their studies.

The school year comes to an end. One girl fails her Greek exam and is caught after an attempt at cheating. The pregnant girl has gotten married. School goes on. Life goes on.

And that about sums up TERZA LICEO.

Surreal, funny, poignant... and there IS a logic to it

I am a European who hasn't read one single book by Dr. Seuss, but I am magically captivated by this movie. I've seen the DVD four times by now, first having seen it twice at film archive shows.

There's only one way to have the seemingly absurd pieces to fall into place. This film is a highly sensitive depiction of a little boy's hopes and fears--occasionally wildly fluctuating between the two. Just try and find another logic behind "Didn't you know? This makes you my old man." "Yeah, I guess it does, at that."

Yes, Tommy Rettig's singing voice was dubbed by Tony Butala. After all, there's only so much one person can do. Hans Conried probably sang himself. After his double voice role in Disney's "Peter Pan" he went on to play the Magic Mirror in several Disneyland TV shows. "5,000 Fingers" must be the finest showcase of his talents.

Repeating the last words of the previous speaker was not a mannerism of Tommy Rettig's. All that is in the script, and Tommy was simply doing his work. The previous year, he was incredible in the neglected b/w movie "Paula" which is basically a two-person drama with Loretta Young. (If anyone watches "Paula" and does not have a lump in their throat at the end they are beyond all hope.)

The "Hassidics" with the Siamese beard ("Or you will get choked by the beard of the twins With the Siamese beard With a terrible twin on each end" as it says in a deleted song) are simply the boy's two great-uncles--their photos can be seen on top of the family piano.

Originally, Dr. Terwilliker did not appear in the parlor scene at the beginning. Some stills are in circulation--one on the VHS tape box--where Bart Collins darkens the eyebrows on the sheet music portrait with a pencil. The same version includes an alarm clock which Bart attempts to set ahead. In the final movie the clock still remains in one scene, at the high end of the piano keyboard. Late in the production, an immense risk was taken; having anyone speak directly to the camera is problematic, let alone a child. But this worked superbly. Some lines were obvious afterthoughts. I've seen a script with the line "One hundred per cent perfect gold plated fony [sic], double fony" added in Tommy Rettig's hand.

The musical score goes to show what years of experience can do. Friedrich Hollaender--Frederick Hollander in America--composed music for pictures as early as in 1931. The simplistic ditty "Ten Happy Fingers" is developed into many superb variations in the film score. As someone who plays himself, I found Bart's "hundred pianos" rendition under the baton of Dr. Terwilliker a sheer delight. (Characteristically, Dr. T. is not satisfied...)

Films like this also remind us about the ephemeral nature of life. At least Peter Lind Hayes, Hans Conried, and Tom Rettig have passed away. Tom--a highly esteemed computer programmer--later said these words in his dBase language, "IF its_time EXIT ENDIF." But they will live forever on film. And when "Bart and the excited dog run lickety-split down the street" you will want to see it all over again... I did.

Military Comedy with a Thin Storyline

Military men marching pridefully and gloriously in the the morning sun, with delightful music played by the military orchestra, just getting ready to another hard working day at the army barracks, or are they? In the setting of the rising sun there is a big line of cars and trucks heading for the barracks, what are they doing here and who are they? The question is solved fast, and to the military mens big surprise its a film production company, who has planned to make a "big blockbuster" science fiction movie at the army barracks, but one commanding officer is distend to make it very difficult for the Hollywood film crew... and for then on, the movie just shows a cheap slice of comedy and a little bit of romance, and thats about it.

What we do get out of this comedy is a thin storyline, and some decent funny characters, but not memorable. The funniest character is Peter Sellers, and he is probably the only one you will remember the most, when you have sat through this movie.

One thing that was a little bit funny, was the movie they were filming in the movie, its funny because it looks like a Ed Wood production, very unimagined and just cheap. There is not one time where you believe its a making of a expensive science fiction movie, and just looking at the film crew playing "big time Hollywood stars" is so laughable... and by the way I have never seen a badder costume design for a Martian in a movie, since 'Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster' 1964, and that is pretty bad!

See it if you are in a good laughing mood, if your sad its just sad to look at.

Peculiar Western about a relentless revenge with very good support cast

This story is set on early California's wild and wicked pioneers days . It's a particular Western with a magnificent Cornel Wilde seeking vendetta against the killers of his loved ones and a splendid Yvonne De Carlo in double role . This moving picture tells the story of Juan ( Cornel Wilde) a respected citizen who returns to the rancho of his old friend Gaspar (John Qualen) , he comes and just promised marriage his young girlfriend (Yvonne De Carlo) and settle down for a peaceful existence . Just when they are about to marry ,comes the vengeful Sandro (Rodolfo Acosta) and his henchmen (Lon Chaney Jr , Frank DeKova) and murder the family . Juan has sworn revenge , detain and undercover the gunfighters. Juan kills some of them and is pursued by deputies (Raymond Burr and Anthony Caruso) . Meanwhile he escapes and is only helped by the twin sister ( again Yvonne De Carlo ) . At the ending takes place the dreaded final showdown against the thug on the snowy outdoors and the protagonist realizes he must stand alone against impossible odds , nobody is willing to help him .

Acceptable Western set in Old Spanish California dealing with range war and full of fights , duels , revenge and stirring drama . Ample support cast plenty of known secondary actors who lend solid support as John Qualen, Robert Warwick, Anthony Caruso, John Dierkes, Stuart Whitman, Lon Chaney Jr , Frank DeKova , many of them usual in Western genre . Although made in low budget by the producer Benedict Bogeaus and RKO , Radio Pictures Inc, is a very efficient film and pretty entertaining . The picture contains colorful cinematography by John Alton( Noir cinema's usual photographer along with Nicholas Musuraka), though is necessary an urgent remastering because the copy is granulated ; furthermore atmospheric and appropriate musical score by Louis Forbes . This quickie is finely directed by Allan Dwan , a craftsman working from the silent cinema . Dwan directed over 1400 films , including one-reels, between his arrival in the industry (circa 1909) and his final film in 1961. Among them some good Western as ¨ Restless breed¨, ¨The rivers edge¨,¨Cattle Queen of Montana¨, ¨Tenessee's partner¨, ¨Montana Belle¨ and ¨Silver Lode¨ his unqualified masterpiece. Rating : 5,5 . Passable and acceptable Western in Mexican style.

Ann Miller Deserved an Oscar

Total delight from start to finish, this witty, musical version of The Taming of the Shrew. This show within a show is bright and splashy and boasts terrific performances, songs, dancing, and costumes. Howard Keel plays the egotistic Fred Graham who us mounting this new musical with ex-wife Lilli Vanessi (Kathryn Grayson) as his leading lady. The battling couple mirrors the battling couple in the play. All very clever.

As good as Grayson and Keel as however, Ann Miller totally steals the show as Lois Lane, the brassy chorus girl Fred has given a part (the younger sister) in the play. Mills is fantastic as she sings and dances her way through some great numbers: It's Too Darn Hot, From This Moment On, Always True to You, and Tom, Dick or Harry. Her opening number of Too Darn Hot is astounding as she swirls and taps around Cole POrter's living room and across his table tops. The skin tight tassled red outfit is probably the sexiest outfit Miller ever wore and she looks great. She was always denied the starring roles in MGM musicals which is a shame. MGM preferred the more demure types like Grayson or Judy Garland, Jane Powell, Debbie Reynolds for starring roles and Miller always got stuck playing the flashy friend or other woman.

Also good in this great musical are Keenan Wynn and James Whitmore as the thugs who get to sing Brush Up Your Shakespeare. Bob Fosse, Bobby Van, and Tommy Rall are the three dancers. Carol Haney and Jeanne Coyne show up for the From This Moment On number with Miller and the Boys. Ann Codee is the maid, Claude Allister is the butler, Willard Parker is Tex, Dave O'Brien is the stage manager, Kurt Kaznar is the stage father, and Ron Randell plays Cole Porter.

Originally done in 3-D, Kiss Me Kate is shock full of great songs and some of the best lyrics ever heard. For those of us growing up in the 50s, most of the songs from this musical are familiar hits, including Wunderbar, From This Moment On, Always True to You, and So In Love.

Kiss Me Kate is a textbook musical that works on all levels. Keel and Grayson were never better, Miller is outstanding, Whitmore and Wynn are fun, and Tommy Rall gets a couple of dance numbers (My Can't You Behave) that prove him to be one of the best dancers of his generation. The short dance solo with Fosse and Haney also presages much of Fosse's later groundbreaking choreography.

Not a false step in this film, which ranks as one of the great musicals.

Backing For The Show

For the film Lucky Me, Doris Day was reunited with composers Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster who wrote the score for Calamity Jane and gave Doris one of her biggest hits, Secret Love in one of her biggest film successes. Unfortunately none of the songs from Lucky Me was ever any kind of hit for Day and the film is a very ordinary backstage story.

With some establishing shots in Miami Beach done in Cinemascope, Lucky Me is also the name of the show composer Robert Cummings is writing the score for. Doris is part of a quartet act that consists of Phil Silvers, Eddie Foy, Jr., and Nancy Walker. Through some of the usual Phil Silvers shenanigans, the group has to work to pay off a debt to restaurant owner Marcel Dalio.

Cummings is staying at the hotel that Dalio's restaurant is at and again through shenanigans, Day and Cummings meet. Day thinks he's garage mechanic and Cummings keeps up the pretense as has been done in more movies I can remember. That's because he's romancing daughter of bankroll, Bill Goodwin in the person of Martha Hyer.

If you can't tell where this is all going you haven't seen too many films let alone musicals. It would have been nice if Doris and the gang had been given some hit songs from this film, but Fain and Webster who won Academy Awards for Secret Love and Love Is A Many Splendored Thing came up short in the score for Lucky Me.

Eddie Foy, Jr. and Nancy Walker came up short in footage as well. Especially Nancy Walker who is one of the funniest people around. I believe there is some moments for her in the Warner Brothers vaults if anyone wants to do a director's cut for Lucky Me. Oddly enough Phil Silvers and Nancy Walker within the next 10 years would co-star on Broadway in Do-Re-Mi which was a big success, but never made it to Hollywood.

Doris's fans will like Lucky Me, others can take or leave it and be considered lucky either way.

Anatomy of a murder.

Ambitious,not always successful,this Decoin film is adapted from George Simenon. It's a long flashback,mixing present and past with occasional gaps.The black and white cinematography is thoroughly mastered:Danielle Darrieux, all dressed in black(and beautiful), like a death angel, visits her dying husband with a pallid face in a white room.Another shot, before the end, shows a car disappearing in the darkest night.

Bebe Donge is a romantic woman, a "Madame Bovary",who believes in true love. She does not realize that, in the bourgeois world in which she lives in, these values are no longer in use.Her husband (Gabin) is cynical and does not even try to hide his lovers.In 1951,for the bourgeoisie,divorce was unthinkable:the wedding ceremony, with great pomp meant, for these hypocrites, that what the lord joined together, the world must not undo. So Darrieux ,who was a charming young woman, becomes a murderer. There was nothing to suggest that such a disaster might happen .

Although not as good as "non coupable" with Michel Simon,"la vérité sur Bébé Donge" is eminently watchable and will reward you as much as, say, a Godard movie.Or surely more...
