Hollywood's Pilgrims

Where is the masterpiece American film on this dramatic voyage and settlement of the founders of our democracy? Plymouth Adventure, the best of its kind, has many of the virtues of great American studio work (convincing mise en scene, great ship, vivid action [the storm], fine acting [try to ignore the hobbled accents], and smooth story continuity) and can be enjoyed because of all that, but it never conveys a sense of the agonized desperation and profound spiritual quest of the dissenters. Perhaps Gene Tierney is just too beautfiul, perhaps the costumes are just too sparkling, and certainly the tragic affair with the Captain is better suited to a Douglas Sirk melodrama. For a different account, one can view Mayflower (Anthony Hopkins version), but that errs on the side of political correctness, and drab plotting, and tub-sails a low-budget toy Mayflower. We await the great film about the adventure of these heroic common folks to whom we owe so much.

Boulevard comedy

"Just a song of Paris, Music made for two, Brings me sweetest mem'ries, Memories of you!" The quality of the lyric of the title-song is broadly indicative of the quality of the film. That said, it is not a romance, but definitely a comedy, albeit one with a few (not very credible) romantic moments.

Matthew Ibbetson (Dennis Price) is a rather prim young man who has recently succeeded his father as head of a family firm producing patent medicines. Concerned about falling sales in France, he visits Paris and becomes enamoured of Clémentine (Anne Vernon), a cabaret singer. Shortly afterwards, she turns up in London and asks him to set her up in an apartment. Not the sort to contemplate keeping a mistress, Matthew thinks he ought to marry Clémentine, but he anticipates opposition from his overbearing mother (Hermione Baddeley). Worse still, an absurdly jealous old admirer (Mischa Auer) follows the singer from Paris, vowing melodramatically to kill his rival. Farcical incidents ensue.

"Song of Paris" falls between two stools. The farce is not sufficiently sustained to induce real hilarity, while the wit is never sharp enough for the piece to succeed as light comedy. In the last ten minutes or so, the silliness of the humour abruptly moves up a gear (and failed to carry me along with it, so the end did not come too soon). I see that Frank Muir and Denis Norden had a hand in the script. The cheerfully unsubtle tone does indeed recall 1950s radio comedy, and, for all its efforts to evoke the ambiance of 'Gay Paree,' the film is every bit as primly English as Mr Ibbetson. At first, Clémentine comes across as a good-natured courtesan, interested in the foreigner chiefly on account of his wealth. Once in London, however, she turns into a 'nice' girl who wants to get married and settle down – when the film might have been funnier had she retained more of her original character.

Dotted through the film are three or four songs. Clémentine sits at the piano, waves her hands over the keyboard, and the sound of an orchestra comes from nowhere to support her vocalising. Musical interludes of this kind seem to have been popular in the 1950s. Nowadays they seem embarrassingly phoney.

"Song of Paris" raises the occasional smile. No film can be all bad that has such standard British comic turns of the era as Kynaston Reeves as a vicar and Richard Wattis as a civil servant. Dennis Price, Hermione Baddeley, and Mischa Auer are all proficient comic actors, moreover, who do their best with the material given them - which only makes the viewer wish they'd been given something better. Ibbetson is perhaps too naïve a character to suit Price's talents; just a few years later the role would surely have gone to Ian Carmichael.

Very good

Very atypical period piece from Naruse. It's actually a samurai picture, of sorts, though it's definitely more melodrama than action. Michiyo Kogure and Tomoemon Otani star as the titular pair. Kogure is the widow of an assassinated samurai and Otani was that man's pupil. They have been sent out to seek revenge on the murderer, Kogure's first suitor (So Yamamura), but their long and arduous journey has so far been fruitless. The two start to fall in love and question whether their quest for revenge is even worth it. This could have been a bit better told near the beginning - for the first forty minutes or so I was playing catch-up with the plot. But once I got a hold of it, I found it quite powerful, with a lot of subtle, unexpressed emotions. All three of the main cast members are excellent.

Implausible From Start To Finish

This belongs to a small and select group of movies. These are the big-studio movies with known performers that are, nevertheless, absolutely awful. Another in this category is "The Guilt Of Janet Ames," which is at least more amusingly terrible.

Maybe Gig Young wanted to play an idealistic tough-guy doctor. Maybe Keenan Wynn wanted to show his chops playing a down-and-out fighter battling blindness. Someone must have had a reason of some sort for casting them in these roles.

The story about three boyhood friends takes place in New Orleans; yet many of the players, Wynn most noticeably, affect heavy Bronx accents. (The third friend is a Roman Catholic priest. His part seems to have been trimmed to almost nothing in the print I saw.)

Wynn seems to be wearing contact lenses that make his pupils appear cloudy. His performance isn't bad, really, but he is cast against type and in a one-dimensional role. It's a no-win situation. As is the whole movie.

Wonderful Family Story

This movie ranks among movies like Lassie, Smoky, National Velvet & The Black Stallion. This tear jerker story is about a man & his horse & the wonderful bond they had. Unfortunately it has never been released on video & I have not found it on TV, Cable or Satellite since I was a kid. At least not since the invention of VCR's. I have many fond memories of this film.

Simply the best

Bob Greene of the Chicago Tribune has called this the best journalism movie ever made. He is absolutely right.

If you are interested in art movies, see Citizen Kane. If you are interested in screwball comedy, check out His Girl Friday. If it's history you're after, watch All the Presidents Men. If you want to see a classic journalism movie, rent one of the multiple versions of The Front Page.

But if you want to see a movie that actually shows you what life is like inside a newsroom, how reporters work together to get a story, and how "the story" is not always about the big expose but sometimes just about getting the little details right, this is your movie.

You can also watch Ron Howard's The Paper, but it's a pale imitation of this movie.

Unfortunately, this movie is not available on video or DVD. Keep an eye on American Movie Classics or one of the other cable channels, though, since it is regularly featured.

Marge and Gower Champion's Best Vehicle

This bright Technicolor vehicle for Marge and Gower Champion is chock full of well-choreographed musical numbers - especially the very sexy "Cairo." The film had a high rating on IMDb until it received a (well-written) negative review.

The divorce drama doesn't get in the way of the music, and Dennis O'Keefe is excellent as the divorce lawyer. Marge and Gower are also good. Especially Gower - who's as cute as a button - as a hypochondriac.

Every other film that featured Marge and Gower Champion had so-so choreography at best, which makes this one a welcome pleasure.

This *is* a small musical compared to a film such as "The Band Wagon," but it's enormously entertaining in its own right.

Top Kick, Man's Best Friend.

Wild Stallion is directed by Lewis D. Collins and written by Dan Ullman. It stars Ben Johnson, Edgar Buchanan, Martha Hyer, Hayden Rorke and Hugh Beaumont. A Cinecolor production with music by Marlin Skiles and cinematography by Harry Neumann.

Unassuming family friendly Oater, Wild Stallion tells a simple story of a boy who loses his horse but upon entering adulthood seeks the equine out for a reunion. Story is book ended by Indian attacks, the first of which leaves young Dan Light an orphan and without his beloved Colt, and the middle section concentrates on Dan growing into a man, his loves, his yearnings and his dealings with the Cavalry. There a mature thread in the mix dealing with the ethical treatment of horses, and it all builds to a finale where both man and beast have their heroic moments in the West. Hooray!

Nicely photographed around Simi Valley and Chatsworth and competently performed by the cast, Wild Stallion achieves its goals without fuss and filler. 6/10

Betty Hutton and Cornel Wilde are superb in their 'flyer' roles!

I saw this film in a theatre when it first came out and, had forgotten a great deal of it, until I saw it again last evening.

Much of the film is actual footage of the REAL Barnum and Bailey Circus, setting up, tearing down and loading up for the trip to the next venue.

I had also forgotten how superb both Betty Hutton and Cornel Wilde are doing a great deal of their own 'flying'! While you realize that they have a net just under the view of the camera, they both perform physically demanding stunts with the camers right in their faces! I can't stand on my head on the floor much less on a swinging trapeze!!

Wilde's front summersault from one swinging bar to another swinging bar is breathtaking!!

Some of the action is quite dated and the trainwreck is...well, DeMille's rendition of a massive trainwreck. The plot creaks a bit here and there, but the many performers do their bits with conviction.

Hutton and Wilde steal the show from Heston and Stewart. I recommend this film to Circus lovers everywhere and to people who appreaciate actors placing themselves in Harms Way to create illusions (be they VERY dangerous illusions) of the REAL thing! I give it an 8.

Rex chases the wagon to the barn of rancher Lem Shaver, where he learns from Slim that Russ Tasker, a wealthy rancher and owner of the only artesian-fed reservoir in the valley, has charged such high prices for water that the ranchers are bankrupt. Tasker's henchmen kill rancher Matt Becker and have his son Johnny branded as an outlaw. Rex learns that the Beckers had found a meager water supply and Rex suspects that is what led to the killing and the charges against Johnny. With the aid of Slim and Johnny's sweetheart, Sue, Rex finds that the Becker spring is fed from the same underground lake that feeds Tasker's well-guarded reservoir. The Local Ponderosa Owner Wants Even More

Though what musketeers of any kind have to do with this story I don't know, Rex Allen stars in this fine B western where cattle buyer Allen gets involved with the problems of a valley and the small ranchers who are being starved out by James Anderson owner of the local Ponderosa who also controls all the water in the valley with a reservoir he's built and maintains with gunmen.

His father built the Ponderosa, but the son wants to make it bigger yet by driving all the other ranchers out and then damming up an underground river that feeds the reservoir and selling electric power to surrounding cities. In 1952 still a lot of the country had not yet gotten public power courtesy of one of the New Deal's most innovative and progressive agencies, the Rural Electrification Agency. The plot would have resonated well in the rural market area though not as well as in the Thirties. In that sense though good and still somewhat topical this would have found a bigger market in the Thirties.

Rex and sidekick Slim Pickens also have to contend with young lovers Mary Ellen Kay and Michael Hall whose father is killed by Anderson and his men and is seeking vengeance. Hall's understandable grief and quest for Anderson's hide might upset plans that Allen has to bring Anderson down legally.

Both Rex Allen and Slim Pickens have a background in rodeo, in fact Slim Pickens was a rodeo clown. About six or seven minutes in the film is devoted to Slim's routine with a bull like you would have seen in his younger days.

This is a pretty serious western and a good one showing Rex Allen to good advantage as a cowboy hero.

A portrait of a pioneer in medicine

Emily Dunning was a determined young woman when she decided to go into the medical field. What attracted her to this area of science was a role model she met during a family crisis involving her mother at their arrival in New York. When the mother collapsed, she goes out trying to get help, but there are no physicians in the neighborhood, except the kind Dr. Yeomans, a woman doctor, who not only treats her mother, but is instrumental in inspiring young Emily to follow in her foot steps.

This story takes place at the end of the XIX century, when women were a rarity in pursuing a medical career. The determined Emily Dunning enters Cornell, where she is the only female in the class. All the male students realize she is in because the love of medicine, but they are not too kind to her. The handsome Ben Barringer is the only one that seems taken by Emily.

When Emily is ready for her internship, she is accepted by a New York hospital. The head of the department makes it clear about his feelings toward a woman in the hospital and gives her the worst assignments. Dr. Dunning accepts what's given to her until she proves herself to be an asset to the institution that has been unkind to her. After an outbreak of typhoid fever, Dr. Yeomans comes to the hospital to help and the two women are reunited. Dr. Barringer confesses his love for Emily as he is leaving for Paris on a research trip.

This biopic was presented recently by TCM. The movie, rarely seen these days, should be seen more often because director John Sturges' inspired take on the life of a woman who overcame all odds against her. June Allyson plays Emily Dunning with her usual spunk, given the subject matter a great reading. Arthur Kennedy also did an excellent job as Ben Barringer. Gary Merrill, Mildred Dunnock are seen in supporting roles.

Minor search drama from MGM to give Keel non-singing role...

HOWARD KEEL was MGM's robust baritone who would still be making big musicals for his home studio--but DESPERATE SEARCH was designed to keep the actor busy when there were no musical assignments ready for him. It's strictly a programmer for the bottom half of a double bill, running only one hour and thirteen minutes.

Keel acquits himself well--strong and earnest--as the pilot who is part of a search organized to find his two children missing in a plane crash. His ex-wife, PATRICIA MEDINA, is on hand to stir up a little love rivalry over his affections. JANE GREER is the current wife, anxious that the organizers listen to her husband's idea of where to look for the downed plane. KEENAN WYNN is Keel's pilot friend.

The children are shown stranded in the wilds of British Columbia with a cougar lurking nearby adding danger to their already dire situation. LEE AAKER plays the sturdy and resourceful youngster with the sister who is hysterical most of the time--something that could have been toned down a bit for my taste.

Fairly diverting Dickens adaptation

James Hayter is most likely remembered in the UK as the voice of Mr Kipling in the TV advertisements, but here he is an excellent Mr Pickwick, the lead character in this adaptation of 'The Pickwick Papers' by Charles Dickens.

Not in the same league as the David Lean-directed 'Great Expectations' and 'Oliver Twist' which preceded it, this film, directed by Noel Langley, is nevertheless not bad. It is entertaining, with an excellent cast ranging through character actors such as James Donald, Hermoines Baddeley and Gingold, Nigel Patrick, and William Hartnell; through to scene stealers like Joyce Grenfell.

It distills rather a wordy novel well, and provides it with the language of cinema to get the point across. Not an expensive production, but with some nice touches, such as Kathleen Harrison's twitchy Rachel; Mr Jingle's deck of cards; the runaway horse; and an early display of outraged bluster from Hattie Jacques, which she would repeat two decades later as a member of the Carry On team.

Silly but funny.

Jean Boyer 's only claim to fame was "circonstances atténuantes"(1939)."Le trou normand " retains an obsolete charm ,thanks to the perfect cast:Bourvil,Jane Marken,Noel Roquevert,Brigitte Bardot,Jeanne Fusier-Gir. Village idiot inherits an inn but there's one condition :he 's got to go back to school and pass an exam!His auntie,who covets the heritage,puts a wrench in the works."Le trou normand" is the name of the valuable property.In Normandy,the "trou normand" is the little glass of calvados you sip in the middle of a gargantuan meal,to make a hole (=trou) in your stomach and to be able to carry on putting away.
