An acceptable B picture. Nothing more.

I did not know Warner Pictures made B movies in the 50's. Even if this one runs 86mn. A drama or a film noir, as you choose. The tale of a young bookie, married to a beautiful woman - Beverly Garland - who goes to jail, and who is involved with hoodlums - Ted De Corsia and Leo Gordon, the two greatest heavies of the movie industry...

Quite entertaining, fast paced, well shot, sometimes brutal with an exciting climax, it's a worthwhile action movie that deserves to be seen. But unfortunately you can foresee the end, too much predictable for my taste. I don't know the director either. I think it may be a producer. I'll check on IMDb. And you can do so...

Review :

Silly and goofy, but flawed Mexican haunted house comedy

Gathered at a remote mansion to hear a family member's will-reading, a masked murderer tries to keep the surviving members from getting their inheritance and forcing an amateur sleuth to put an end to the rampage.

A Mexican horror-comedy, focusing mainly on the comedy but still with enough horror to really count when it matters, that spoofs the classic-style haunted house films, with secret passages, peeping portraits, and such that it feels really funny and goofy without the benefit of understanding the wordplay jokes. With lots of great physical jokes, including the knife-wielding hand emerging from a picture frame to continually swipe and miss at a clueless and oblivious passerby to time-outs for liquid refreshment during a stalking scene and constant bonks on the head, there's lots of good slapstick here that provides plenty to laugh at. While that ends up diluting the horror somewhat, the fact that it's still a worthwhile enough film does have it's positive points.

Today's Rating-Unrated/PG: Mild Violence.

The Plan 9 of Jungle Movies

I bought this movie after seeing it described in a catalog as the "Plan 9" of jungle movies. I'm pleased to say that I was not disappointed. This piece of cinematic shlock is every bit as laughably bad as Ed Wood's sci-fi epic.

The plot of this movie is pretty much irrelevant. Basically, the film makers took a few actors, shot them standing around a forest, then intercut this material with stock footage of Africa. The discrepancy between the two types of footage is extremely obvious, and pretty darn funny.

Like many other exploitation movies, this movie also features a fair amount of topless females. We get to see several pair of African breasts. However,when Velda, played by a white actress, goes topless, her goodies are carefully shielded by tall grass.

Is this a bit racist? Yes, but not nearly as racist as the rambling prologue to this movie which features white actors in "brown-face" makeup, pretending to be Indians.

The movie also features perhaps the worst gorilla costumes you have ever seen.

Connoisseurs of bad cinema will enjoy the varied treats of "Untamed Mistress." All others should avoid this like the plague.

Brilliant, touching, entertaining!

I may have seen this film more than 20 times, unfortunately it has been unavailable in the UK for 10 years and not on TV all that time so I'm missing it right now. It is such a good film whether you enjoy Benny Goodman's music or jazz for that matter or not. Benny Goodman's life was pretty interesting anyway and it's portrayal in this movie is fairly accurate. The music score covers all the best from Benny Goodman and his Orchestra and is a tribute to one of the earlier band leaders in Jazz. There were not too many bands with both black and white members at that time but this was such a band. What was great for the Benny Goodman Orchestra was the fact that many of the members were such well known and respected performers themselves. There was such talent in that group of musicians and how fortunate it was that they should all come together at that time to create and play some brilliant music.

With regard to the film it is based on the life of Benny Goodman and if you know about him the presence of spoilers here would not ruin things. In short though this film shows Benny Goodman from a young boy through to after he has made a success of himself. His challenges, disappointments, love interests are all a part of the story through the film.

I couldn't fault anything in this film, direction, acting, all of it is just right and it makes for a film you can enjoy over and over again.

They certainly don't make movies like this anymore.

9 out of 10. (I reserved 10 out of 10 for my very best 3 or 4 films, this is a top 10 of mine still).

Classic French crime movie from the 1950s. An influence on everyone from Godard and Truffaut to Paul Thomas Anderson.

Cult director Jean-Pierre Melville was originally involved with French art legend Jean Cocteau, but really found his niche making hard boiled crime movies. 'Bob le flambeur' was the first major work by him, and he kept making movies up until the early 1970s with 'Dirty Money'. His work had a huge influence on the French New Wave led Godard and Truffaut (who cast him in a supporting role in 'Breathless' as an acknowledgment), and has proved to be a major inspiration for American film makers like Scorsese, Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson whose debut 'Hard Eight' owes 'Bob le flambeur' quite a debt. 'Bob..' really knocked me out, and along with the equally brilliant 'Rififi' directed by Jules Dassin and released the same year, it's one of THE great crime movies of the 1950s, and should be mentioned in the same breath as Huston's 'The Asphalt Jungle' and Kubrick's 'The Killing'. All four films have had an enormous influence on most subsequent movies in the heist genre. 'Bob's plot is quite simple but the story itself isn't the half of it. What Melville DOESN'T say is just as important as what he does, and the viewer has to piece a lot of it together for himself. Roger Duchesne is super cool as Bob, the ageing gambler on a perpetual bad streak, Daniel Cauchy is excellent as his cocky young protege Paolo, and Isabelle Corey is sexy and intriguing as Anne, the jailbait who gets involved with them both. Personally I prefer this movie and 'Rififi' to 'Breathless' and any French New Wave I've seen to date, but that says as much about my taste as much as the movies themselves. Even so I highly recommend 'Bob le flambeur' to anybody who involves crime movies. It's a classic of the genre, and still fantastically entertaining.

Atlantis, outer space, monsters and beauties.

Okay now let me get this straight, the people of Atlantis escaped their sinking continent by blasting off into space where they colonized the 13th moon of Jupiter so 3000 years ago. Now only a dozen or so are left and they are all young, attractive women and just one middle aged man who claims to be the father of all of them. As a certain pointy eared TV character might say, "Fascinating captain." This movie has got to be the culmination of many male fantasies all rolled into one. A bunch of guys from Earth land on the on the planet, which has breathable atmosphere and plenty of sunlight despite being hundreds of millions of miles further from the sun than Earth. They encounter a bunch of miniskirted, barefoot, submissive women (one of whom even exclaims "Men at last!" so you know what has been on their minds!) and get a chance to play hero by defeating a monster called The Creature (a man in a black bodysuit and a monster mask). Unique to say the least. Actually I found myself liking it because of its very ineptness. The photographer never lets us forget the girls sex appeal since the camera is often on ground level giving us a good look at their legs and there is also a long interpretive dance scene. I would say they don't make them like this anymore but the truth is the do, you can find movies similar to this on USA Network every Saturday night at 3 AM.

Cheeeeeese!!

If you're going to appreciate Claude Sautet's first,you'd best forget about all those movies he made afterward ,film noir (" Classes Tous Risques " "Max et Les Ferrailleurs",IMHO ,his best works along with "Les Choses De La Vie") ) or "meaningful" "deep " psychological dramas about Cesar,Rosalie,Vincent ,François and the others .

This is part musical ,part music hall ,part slapstick farce and part romantic drama ;and this is a heavy-handed affair.

In a small principality ,inspired by Monaco and San Marino, a princess about to marry never smiles ;and she must smile before she walks up the aisle ;so secret agents kidnap four variety artists and hold them in the palace till they brighten up the wistful girl.

Most of the viewers will probably have a look cause Louis De Funès is in it ,although he is not really given a chance to shine,the producers fearing he might overshadow the four principals.

Only two of the principals,Henri Salvador (recently deceased) and Annie Cordy are still well known in France ;the most intriguing of the lot is Jimmy Gaillard ,who began as a child in the twenties (Duvivier's "Mystere De La Tour Eiffel ) ,then continued his career as a grown up in moderately pleasant comedies ("L'Amant De Bornéo" " Gringalet" )and ended,if we are to believe the screenwriters,as a stand up comic. At least 30% of the movie consists of music hall numbers and they are not particularly enjoyable ;Cordy's "Fleur De Papillon'" is not really exciting,at least to these ears ,and Salvador's ditties are not better.

All in all,it's a young clueless Jean Carmet who plays his game well;cast ,not as an entertainer -though he is one,and his career in the movies would prove more interesting than the three aforementioned artists-,but as an entertainer's cousin ,from a small Normandy town;in a Bourvil-like performance ,he is really the stand out.

A enthusiastic fan.

I have been a fan of 'The Angel Who Pawned Her Harp' ever since I watched it on television as a child, and I consider myself fortunate to have the film on video. Based on a novel by Charles Terrot, it was shot partly on location at the Angel, Islington, and at Harringay Stadium, London. The plot concerns a beautiful blonde angel who arrives in Islington on a mission of goodwill. To raise some money, she pawns her harp at a second-hand store owned by Joshua Webman. Bringing out the best in the people she meets, she shows them the road down which their happiness lies. Combining ingenuity and sentiment, fantasy and realism, it is a consistently entertaining and often moving story. The acting of all involved is outstanding, especially Diane Cilento, Felix Aylmer, Jerry Desmonde, Joe Linnane, Philip Guard, Sheila Sweet, Edward Evans and Alfie Bass.

The Jodhaa Akbar of the 1950s

Today we make huge hoopla if any Hollywood technician is associated with any Bollywood film. But more than half a century back Sohrab Modi made an epic costume drama employing some very prolific names from the West. His 1952 film Jhansi Ki Rani boasted of Hollywood technicians like Oscar winning cinematographer Ernest Haller (Gone with the Wind), Oscar winning writer Geza Herczeg (The Life of Emily Zola), Oscar nominated editor Russell Lloyd (The Man Who Would Be The King, Moby Dick) and some more on its credit list.

Sohrab Modi was known for his spectacular historical films like Pukar, Sikandar (Alexander – The Great) and Prithvi Vallabh. He continued his legacy of making epic historical biographies with Jhansi Ki Rani which was mounted on a lavish budget and had every element that would add to the magnificence of a costume drama from opulent sets, rich costumes, dramatic dialogues, theatrical performances, extravagant action with lifelike battlefield sequences involving hundreds of horses, elephants and soldiers. To give reference with a contemporary analogy, Jhansi Ki Rani was the Jodhaa Akbar of the 50s.

The film is based on the life history of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, who was one of the first Indians to rebel against the British Government. Rani Lakshmibai finds a prominent mention in history textbooks of India but Sohrab Modi's film takes an in-depth look on the entire biography of the queen from her childhood to her death. In Bollywood history, other than this film, Rani Lakshmibai had a faint one-scene reference in the Ketan Mehta directed Aamir Khan starrer Mangal Pandey towards the end in an epilogue where Varsha Usgaonkar posed as the Rani. (Incidentally Sohrab Modi's Jhansi Ki Rani had a one-scene reference to Mangal Pandey). The common link between Lakshmibai and Mangal Pandey is that both were associated with the First War of Indian Independence – the uprising against British that started in 1957.

Ketan Mehta had planned a biographical on Rani Lakshmibai as a follow-up film to Mangal Pandey and an extension on the 1957 Uprising. Unfortunately with the box-office failure of Mangal Pandey, his film never took off. Similarly actresses Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai had once contemplated playing Jhansi Ki Rani but none of the projects materialized. Thankfully that leaves Sohrab Modi's production as the only feature film on the life of Rani Lakshmibai and its authenticity remains un-tampered. A TV series on Rani Lakshmibai is currently on air but the literary manipulations to the biography to adapt to the long-drawn-out requirements of the small screen, completely spoils the essence of the legend.

Sohrab Modi took the effort to keep his film's screenplay (penned by half a dozen writers) historically accurate and comprehensive and yet entertaining. The film opens with the queen's childhood when she was known as Manu and had the courage to face an elephant. When the chief adviser of Jhansi, Rajguru (Sohrab Modi) sees her valour, he asks Manu's father Moropant to get her married to the much-elder King of Jhansi, Gangadhar Rao (Mubarak). So the 9-year-old Manu is married off to the 50-year-old Gangadhar. Trained under Rajguru, Manu grows up to be Lakshmibai (Mehtab), the Rani of Jhansi who is proficient at all physical and political challenges. (Ironically, in real life Mehtab was married to Sohrab Modi who was elder to her by 20 years).

Lakshmibai has a son from Gangadhar Rao who soon succumbs to illness after which the couple adopts a boy Damodar Rao to be the heir of Jhansi. But the British East India Company rejects the adopted Damodar Rao as the claimant to the throne of Jhansi and wants to seize the kingdom. That results into conflict between the Queen and British resulting into rebellion that led to the First War of Indian Independence in 1957.

Sohrab Modi came from the stage background which reflected pretty much in his film. The drama induced through the heavy-worded dialogues was intense and the performances were very theatrical. There was no compromise to get the period look of the film perfect (real foreign actors played the British characters) and the magnificence showed in every frame. As the film nearly perfected in getting the 'costume' era feel and dense 'drama' effect, Jhansi Ki Rani aptly justified its genre of 'costume drama'.

The film had a US release in 1956 and was titled 'The Tiger and the Flame' based on one elaborate dance piece that Gangadhar Rao organizes to welcome the grownup Lakshmibai to the court and take charge of the kingdom. This was India's first Technicolour film, though unfortunately the DVD I got had a Black and White print of the film and I kept wondering throughout on how the film would look in each frame had it been in colour. However despite all its visual brilliance and historical relevance, the film didn't perform as expected at the box-office and was reportedly a big loss to Sohrab Modi who was the producer as well.

Nevertheless Jhansi Ki Rani is a wonderful watch if you like well-made historical costume dramas.
