Another strong performer by Gabin.

Gloomy and without concessions, this film definitely won't make you happier after watching it, but it's so well made you will probably get into the plot, even with the slow pace and naif styling common in 50's French cinema.

Of course Gabin is a "good guy", tired, tough, but ultimately fair. Even if he's constantly showing he's tired of the job, being badly paid, quite impatient, etc. Needlessly, he steals the movie. The young stars don't disappoint. Maybe Francis is a bit too slick for the age, being sort of a natural leader who never misses a cue. Alain's ingenuity is believable, and that's quite a feat for a child actor. Sylvette is also right on track as the "beautiful working class bitter heroine". The prostitute step mum's treatment is also an interesting character, given she's never given moral lessons or shown "what happens to those people", unlike other films of the epoch. Finally, as usual, no "accompanying music" and a "minimalist" in the sense of austere décor aid for this film's oppressive feeling you get while watching it.

IMDb's pro reviewer "Dumnteil" is accurate as usual when comparing it favourably with the way more famous "400 coups". Enjoy!

The Great Pedro Infante in an Episodic Uneven Film

Completed only a few years before the end of his short life, "La Vida No Vale Nada" earned Pedro Infante a Silver Ariel for Mexico's best male performance of 1955. Infante remains the primary reason to see this episodic, somewhat disjointed film. The Mexican star plays Pablo, an illiterate, alcoholic drifter, who has bouts with the bottle and interludes with several women of varying character: a loving widow, a generous professional, his saintly mother, and his father's lusty mistress. While attractive, Infante does not have stereotypical movie-star looks and is convincing as a common man who struggles with existence. Women play a significant role in Pablo's life and offer him redemption, love, and sex, for which he seems to offer little in return. Although he reunites with his mother, he bonds most closely with his beachcomber father, whose destiny he seems fated to follow.

Fortunately, the movie offers opportunities for Infante to sing, and his voice, rich and velvety in tone, provides another reason to see the film. In two scenes, however, the actor sings while he is supposedly intoxicated. Although enjoyable, these sequences are somewhat incredible because his enunciation and notes are perfect despite his inebriation. That a good-looking man with such a rich voice would have to scratch out a living with odd jobs also stretches the plot's believability.

Although others in the cast perform well, the film is Infante's show, and his charm supports its weaker sections. Rogelio Gonzalez's direction is competent, although the transitions from episode to episode at times leave the viewer wondering if scenes were edited out. The IMDb plot outline for this film bears no relation to "La Vida No Vale Nada" and must refer to another film with the same title. Despite its flaws, this often-entertaining film is a showcase for the talents of one of Mexico's greatest stars. Although the movie is not worthy of his talents, "La Vida No Vale Nada" provides a showcase for the dramatic and vocal skills of the great Pedro Infante.

Film for Thought!

A movie that I saw for the first time decades ago and numerous times since! Every time I watch it, I discover new facets in Harras'personality. On one hand he is the tough guy, the party animal, the womanizer; however, he shows his softer, almost romantic side when he meets Diddo Geiss. I think that the movie could be a wonderful teaching tool, because it illustrates how "non-political", even rebellious Germans were drawn into the Nazi ideology and paid the ultimate price! Udo Jürgens and Marianne Koch were fabulous together! I would recommend this film for upper level German classes in the US. It is a good addition to "Die weisse Rose" or "Sophie Scholl".

worth watching for those who like films of the 1950s

I had wanted to see this film for some time, because it comes in the middle of the most productive part of Trevor Howard's career. It intrigued me as it was the only non-English language film he made while he was still in his prime. I had pretty much given up on ever seeing it, thinking it too obscure for DVD release. And then out of the blue it was released in France in spring 2008.

It is definitely worth seeing if a) you like any of the three stars, who all give good performances; b) you like films (French or otherwise) from the 1950s - this film is very much a product of its time; c) you are interested in tracing the career of the director, Henri Verneuil, best known in the English-speaking world for The Sicilian Clan (1968) with Gabin and Delon.

As I said above, I watched the film because I wanted to see what Trevor Howard was like in it. He is undoubtedly very good, even if he seems to struggle with the French dialogue on occasion. But he has a couple of very effective scenes, and the film is an under-appreciated but nonetheless important one in the development of his career.

The other stars, Daniel Gelin and Francoise Arnoul, are good too. The same cannot quite be said of Verneuil's direction, which oscillates between the effective and the overly static. There are a few too many long dialogue-driven sequences - partly the fault of Joseph Kessel's somewhat wordy script, taken from his own novel - that are unimaginatively filmed. I wonder what would have happened if a director like Becker or Clouzot had been in charge? But both the direction and the film itself really come alive in the sequences filmed outside on location in Lisbon. Not only do cast and crew seem to have been enlivened by the location shooting - a scene on a river boat, for example, is beautifully shot and acted - but the viewer also gets a pretty vivid picture of what Lisbon in the 1950s was like. The outdoor scenes are exceptionally vivid, and although there are a few too many stops for for the camera to take in "local colour" (a key facet of so many films of the period, offering the contemporary viewer a travelogue-style experience) nonetheless the location work in and of itself makes the film worth viewing.

The final points of interest are a fairly frank (for the time) depiction of sexuality, and the faint echoes of "doomed lover" romances so important in French cinema of the late 1930s. The film can be seen as a cousin of earlier films like Quai des Brumes and Hotel Du Nord.

I think that overall, if the direction and writing had been more dynamic, this would be regarded as a minor classic, and would not have languished in the relative obscurity it has done. But the actors deserve plaudits, as does the camera-work of Roger Hubert. It is also pleasing to note that Mme. Arnoul was still working as recently as 2007.

I hope you enjoy stock footage...

This film is enjoyable mainly as a historical artifact for aviation buffs. It depicts an era of naval aviation neglected in mainline Hollywood features- the mid-1950s after the Korean War but before the advent of supersonic naval jets. Almost all flying sequences were apparently assembled from stock footage of aircraft such as Grumman F9F-6 Cougars and McDonnell F2H Banshees flying from early post-WWII straight-deck US Navy carriers. We also see North American FJ-3 Furies, an F2H-2P Banshee, an FH-1 Phantom, and Sikorsky HO3S-1 helicopters.

Unfortunately, the movie offers little else to recommend it. The dialog is stilted, the script contains numerous red herrings, the plot is sometimes hard to follow, and the main characters are clichéd. The lead actors generally do a decent job of working with what little they were given, and the director does a better job of keeping the plot moving than in other 50s B-movie groaners, but this often doesn't amount to much. Almost all of the character interaction occurs in a handful of sparsely furnished rooms on an "aircraft carrier" where background noise and enlisted personnel are remarkably absent, probably due to budget limitations. The extensive stock footage is not used very skillfully; some shots are blatantly repeated several times in rapid succession, and aviation buffs will spot numerous continuity errors as the characters "land" a different type of aircraft than they were "flying" in the previous scene. It doesn't appear that any flying sequences were shot specifically for this movie, and very little of the film appears to have been shot aboard an actual naval vessel.

This movie is not stiflingly boring like "The Starfighters", but it's no "Bridges at Toko-Ri" or "Strategic Air Command"- not even close.

It's Not Nice to Steal Treasure from the Bedouins

If you can accept the fact that Victor McLaglen is running an Irish Pub in Bengazi, Libya during the post World War II years, you'll swallow anything. Other than the fact that alcohol is forbidden to Moslems, I'm sure he's doing a great business.

He and Richard Conte hear of a proposition from escaped convict Richard Erdman about some treasure buried in a mosque in the middle of the desert, they take off looking for it. Of course at the same time, Scottish police inspector Richard Carlson and McLaglen's daughter Mala Powers also go looking for them.

They all wind up with a lot of angry Bedouins shooting at them. I mean they are trying to rob the tribe. How rude of the Bedouins to object.

Bengazi played the bottom half of double bills when it came out and I'm sure the audience was praying for the main feature to start.

Highly Intelligent Super-Scary Movie

I saw this movie in 1955, when I was 35 and not so long after my time in the Air Force in WWII, so the RAF flight in the Dakota (same as our USAF C47 and the civilian DC3) resonated for me. But it was really the extraordinary level of suspense that made it so memorable. It starts with a dream of a Dakota lost in a storm and crashing onto a rocky beach. Crucial is the exact number on board. As the real trip progresses in stages, passengers get on and off. Just as it seems the fatal number has been circumvented, something happens to re-institute it. The way this was done was so believable and artfully handled. I particularly remember an episode with someone pointing out that telling the pilot the dream is not such a good idea; after all, he needs his skills to fly the plane safely, and if he takes the dream seriously and it makes him nervous...I have used this idea the rest of my life when directing hundreds of people. It touches on a profound bit of philosophy: when is deception justified? A great movie: if you get the chance, don't miss it.

It helps to be old enough

For those of us who lived thru the War, BATTLE CRY is a splendid multi story Marines in Love and War drama, masterfully overseen by veteran Raoul Walsh, with a career perf by Aldo Ray, backed with fine work from Van Heflin, James Whitmore, Tab Hunter, Nancy Olson and others in a star cast. A huge box office hit from an equally big bestseller, marking a vast improvement on the book. Sentimental, exciting, plausible, involving and thoroughly entertaining; its 149 minute running time paced properly, unlike today's bloated epics, which seem to embrace overlength as a substitute for content and skill. Unlike Spielberg's yawner, CRY didn't need to resort to F/X bloodbaths to awaken the audience's attention.

I saw BATTLE CRY on Feb. 19, 1955 at the Laurel Theatre in San Carlos, a Saturday night at the movies in an Art Deco suburban house. Maybe you have to be 66 to appreciate this film for what it represents; and maybe you need to be 26 to swallow Spielberg's version of D-Day. I'll stick with BATTLE CRY.

More surreal than surrealistic

A small town by the shore of a deep, dark river is ruled by death. Its people live by a code of honor that encourages them to take revenge for any form of insult, no matter how insignificant. A seemingly never ending blood feud ravages the town, as the men, one by one, kill each other proudly, embracing their acts of murder with a sense of mission. Vengeance is considered not so much a crime as an act of courage. However, if a murderer manages to escape without being killed in return, he's banished from the town and left with no option but to cross the river and to live on the desolate, opposite shore. The dead are also taken across the river, inside their coffin, and buried in a distant cemetery. Few are those who oppose this violent way of life and little is what they can do about it. Gerardo, a young man of modern thought who studied medicine in the nearest big city, must return to his hometown and try to put an end to this delirious, anachronistic, macho gun culture.

The story and the dialogues are great, and so is the acting! Like in much of Buñuel's other work, a terrible, dreamlike beauty emerges as man's passions and ignorant values devour virtue. In this case, sin appears not so much in the form of lust but of a ferocious sense of vanity (disguised as "honor").

Though quite surreal in essence, the film feels more mainstream than the director's work from later decades. The humor here, though clearly present in the absurdity of the situation, is relatively restrained, and the music is at times a little bit campy. The story itself is linear and fairly straight-forward. The ending is perhaps the only small disappointment, not so much because it's so atypical for a Buñuel film, but because it's so sudden.

The black and white photography is very decent, although the image quality of the DVD that I watched was a little bit deteriorated. It would be a real treat to watch an enhanced version.

I hardly doubt that anyone considers this one of Buñuel's unique masterpieces, but it's still a great, extremely enjoyable film with a strong message and, personally, I highly recommend watching it.

''Step Into Cinderella's Magic Slippers....

This is another German made fairy tale film, made in 1955 and released in the us by Childhood Productions in 1966. What a beautiful movie! The English Language version is rather clumsily synchronized, although the voices used for the dubbing are fine. The on location filming is lovely. But what really makes it memorable, is the new musical score, composed by Anne and Milton Delugg. Not only are the songs charming, but the orchestrations are wonderful. This is basically the Grimm Brothers version of Cinderella, but the Fairy Godmother (from Perrault's tale) has been added. Goodtimes Home Video released a near mint videotape of it years ago, but it is now out of print (and it was never easy to find even when it was available). The only other release was a cassette from Republic home video(also out of print) which was missing 22 minutes, and was scratchy and splicey to boot. Ihope this film makes it to DVD soon!

Grand hope and grand illusion.

This Italian movie is only incidentally about life aboard a submarine during the Second World War. It is no epic adventure like the more famous DAS BOOT or RUN SILENT, RUN DEEP. Rather it is a quiet reflective anti-war film about the dilemmas of good human beings trapped by the exigencies and ironies of war. The captain of this submarine, played with stature by Renato Baldini, is a good man, whose sense of humanity is tested to the limit. He rescues from drowning a group of mostly British sailors (including a woman, played by Lois Maxwell). He then, in very Italian fashion, invites them aboard until he can deposit them in the neutral port of Santa Maria in the Azores. The same thing happens with a group of Danish sailors. This time there is no room on board and the survivors must remain perilously on deck and perhaps die if the captain needs to submerge to attack another target. The nicest scene in the movie is the Christmas party on board complete with makeshift Christmas tree, decorations, carols, the exchange of good cheer and words of friendship between rescuers and `captives.' It all comes to a stark halt when the Danish ship is spotted and must be destroyed. The tree, the decorations get cast aside. Without sermonizing, this movie makes its point very effectively, and for that reason is worth seeing. The original title means `The Great Hope.' Its US title was `Submarine Attack.' This is a telling change, in that a `great hope' for peace doesn't sell tickets. The violence implied in the phrase `submarine attack' has more audience clout. Oh, well. The US release was dubbed, rather badly, into English and the synchronization, whenever there is any singing, is fairly dreadful. Nino Rota, who provided the music for many great Fellini films and Coppola's The Godfather movies, scored this one too.

Disappointment for Sturges fans

"Les Carnets du Major Thompson" was based on a novel by Pierre Daninos which was a best-seller in France in the early 1950s. The title literally translates as "Major Thompson's Medals", but a more appropriate translation would be "Major Thompson's Trophies", with "trophies" representing a sexual double-entendre. The novel depicts the adventures of a rather befuddled Englishman living in France, trying to adapt to French ways and falling in love with a Frenchwoman. The Englishman (Major Thompson) is the butt of all the humour, which is why this novel was so popular in France: although set in France, it makes fun of Englishmen!

The film version of "Major Thompson" was directed by Preston Sturges, after he'd rendered himself unemployable in Hollywood and was living in exile. Sturges spoke French fluently, having lived in Paris during his childhood. (Believe it or not, Preston Sturges's mother was the artist who created and gave to Isidora Duncan the long hand-painted scarf which caused Duncan's legendary death by strangulation!) But Sturges's francophilia is the only plus-factor in this terrible movie. His talent was long gone by this time, and so was his energy. The plot of "Major Thompson" is extremely episodic (like its source novel), and the film lurches from one weak scene to another. The fade-out gag is painfully unfunny, like the rest of the film.

Major Thompson is played by Jack Buchanan, a Scotsman who fitted the American conception of "English"-ness much more neatly than most genuine Englishmen did. Buchanan gave excellent performances in several previous films, but he was dying of cancer when he went to France to film "Major Thompson", and it shows. He's a dead man walking.

The only scene in this film which is even vaguely funny occurs when Thompson and his French equestrienne paramour go riding. Their horses won't stay put in front of the cameras, and keep wandering off with their riders brought unwillingly along. Buchanan looks genuinely perplexed as his horse keeps carrying him away from the camera. This scene works so well (in contrast to the rest of the movie) that I don't believe it was planned: I think that the horses were genuinely ill-trained, and Sturges had the good sense to let the horses "ad lib" and steal the scene.

Noél-Noél, a French comedian with a rather comic face (whom I've never found funny otherwise) does a brief cameo, drinking Byrrh in a sidewalk cafe. He doesn't do anything funny here, apart from looking straight into the camera ... which in his case is good for one quick laugh.

I'll rate "Les Carnets du Major Thompson" zero points. I wanted so much to like this movie, because I'm a fan of Preston Sturges and a fan of Jack Buchanan: this was their only collaboration, and the last film for both. But it's sad and unfunny, and I can't recommend it on any level

Tight Identification, Neat Closure

This is a much better Technicolor production than many of the other Castle films of the era. Castle brings back his oblique staging/blocking and adds some interesting low and high angle shots (which had been poorly employed in preceding Castle films) in order to develop a clear psychological motivation for the titular character. The shot-reverse-shot construction is more subtle than previous Technicolor Castle films, making the suture smoother and thus more endearing for the spectator. Depth of field creeps back into Castle's stylistic system in this film, aided by picturesque natural exteriors. Castle plays around with montage again, purposeful as ellipsis and appropriate to plot progression. I am reserved in labeling certain elements of the production as budget due to the possibility of a poor transfer for the copy I viewed (in particular I am referring to the cross-cut shots of wild animals). The script is more natural and a nice fit for the milieu of the film - real people talking honestly to each other. Pace slows and shot-reverse-shot construction gets sloppy half way through the film but is compensated for by some frantic action sequences that distinguish a morality for Ford's character that drives the rest of the narrative forward. There is a nice song (musical number) tri-functional as entr'acte for the story, prompt for budding romantic subplots and homage to the chanchadas of Brazil (ironic, given that after all the Columbia Pictures distribution of Castle's films that The Americano was released through RKO). It was at this time that Columbia Pictures's exploitation of the Brazilian film market was reaching critical mass and spurring the development of the Cinema Novo counter-cinema movement. Dramatic confessions under extreme duress perfectly mirror Castle's The Chance of a Lifetime (1943) and tease out a neat closure to a film that operated with few plot contrivances.

Enjoyable, slick Euro adventure

This is a thoroughly enjoyable, slickly made European thriller starring American tough guy Eddie Constantine, who plays Johnny Jordan, a drifter who is hired by a Fat Man to find out who is hijacking his gun shipments. From a script that has the feel of a 40's Warner Bros film with Bogey, "Barder" is beautifully photographed (in glossy black and white). Studio interiors are expertly mixed with exotic location work, lending the film the look of a budget bigger than the one it most likely had. Light comic touches, (such as a plug-ugly nightclub bouncer who is constantly combing his hair or filing his nails), a supporting cast of beautiful dames (including the glamorous May Britt), assorted low-lifes (like a jealous, knife-throwing husband), and a climactic shoot-out in a lighthouse make the oddly-titled "There Goes Barder" an unexpected pulpy pleasure. (Though some references list this as directed by "John Berry", the on-screen credit reads "Directed by Jacques Lamare".)

Outward Bound

Kieran Moore plays a naval officer who has been released from captivity in Korea having suffered brainwashing.It is felt that he would benefit from being in charge of youths in an Outward Bound training camp on the Welsh coast.Much of the film in so far as it relates to Moore and his charges is predictable.It is rather difficult to take some of it too seriously when you realise that Fowler was 29 and Newley 24 when the film was made.Strange how the British cinema often asked actors in their twenties to try and play 10 years their junior.However that aside it is a reasonable film with some good exterior shots in a rather strange looking Eastman Colour.This was one of the last efforts of the ill fated Group 3 production company.
