Review :

Melodramatic, morally simplistic, dull, wooden acting and devoid of any excitement, thrills or audience involvement – cool title, but everything else is poor

It is the 1950's and the US Government is coming down hard on organised crime, going after the top men in order to cut off the head and kill the snake. Their current target is one Nicky Mansani, the elusive mob boss who has so far managed to stay away from his own senate hearing. As the statements and testimonies come in, the main event is one Joe Gray – who has turned state's evidence against his former mob colleagues, having come back from WWII as a hero and a new man. However, the others aim to prevent Joe from testifying and even set him up for prosecution.

With a title that sounded dark and foreboding and offered the suggestion of a dark crime pulp thriller, I set the video and figured I'd give it a go. However the opening credits suggest a standard period genre film with no frills, an image that the film sadly maintains with the majority of its material. The actual story is a good idea but it is delivered in such a totally flat and unengaging manner that it is really hard to get involved with the film. The flashback structure is difficult to pull off so it is no surprise that the film struggles, but no excuse for being such a mess in regards narrative. The flashbacks are not tense or urgent enough – they needed to be tight, telling and convincing; instead they were often slow, boring and irrelevant. The bits that do work well are lost in a load of scenes that add little to the film and any possible tension is really sucked out of it. As the story goes on it becomes a bit clearer as to its focus and direction but I only really got into it by making an effort and stayed with it despite the delivery – not because of it.

The tone of the film is very melodramatic as opposed to tough and noir-ish and this too is a problem. The dialogue matches this tone and it is too soapy to really suit the subject matter. With the story weakened by the flashback structure and the dialogue being all a bit too melodramatic and earnest, the actors do not have a great deal to work with other than stereotypical cardboard roles from the genre. Russell is far too square and rigid; he never convinces as a former wise-guy and is far to clean-cut and boring as a reformed character. Ralston's character is totally unnecessary and without her the film could have lost most of the WW2 flashback; she is rather bland and added nothing to the film. Withers played blind by being as stiff as a board – sadly he did this in his delivery and not just his posture. Adler is OK but not convincing as a big boss; Tucker is better and more fitting the genre even if it is a by-the-numbers character. Claire Trevor is underused but a good moll and the always-interesting Donlevy was given a solid role in support (I like him – and not just because he is from Northern Ireland!)

Overall this film had potential but it blows it in the delivery. The melodramatic and morally simplistic tone feeds through the script and damages the whole film. The flashback structure is difficult to pull off at the best of times and it falls flat here, producing scenes that are dull, disjointed and unengaging, robbing the subject matter of the dark tone and tight pace that it really needed. The cast are mostly wooden and stiff, with even the OK ones failing to bring much life to this film. Not really worth seeing and I understand now why so few people have seen it.

One of the best love stories EVER!

It amazes me how this movie is so seldom shown is not available on DVD. It's one of the most original love stories ever made, the leads are superb, overcoming the initial impression they are miscast. That proves what gifted actors Booth and Ryan were. This bittersweet love story between a less than glamorous piano girl in a shabby bar and a handsome businessman covers several years of their annual clandestine meeting until their romance is interrupted by World War II. All along the way you have a foreboding of doom for these two unlikely secret lovers, but you root for them anyway. I've written to TCM begging them to show this film, I hope they do so soon.

what? where? x 2 here!

As much as I hate to admit it.....this ghastly Yvonne De Carlo bargain counter costumer had TWO releases in Australia......the first with a Jungle Jim epic CANNIBAL ATTACK......imagine that on the cinema marquee or worse, having to answer the telephone and say THAT to a prospective client.........the first in 1954 at the crumbling CAPITOL THEATRE a 2500 seat atmospheric soon to be the home of AIP extravaganzas......then it was re released AGAIN here in 1965 as a double feature with.....wait for it......can it be......the much demanded........COME September again all at The Sydney CAPITOL. What madness decided this? Wouldn't it be reasonable to expect PILLOW TALK to be reissued instead !? with COME September. ......God only knows why VEILS OF BAGDAD copped it so sweet because it helped the population of Australia be so attracted to costume epics and want to make them ourselves.

An Unappreciated Classic

It is a shame that this film is not available on video or DVD in the North American format. (It is available in the PAL Video format.) I have not seen this film for a couple of years, as it was only shown by a few UHF stations, usually at an ungodly hour around Christmas. The film strikes a good balance between unsentimentality and an affirmation of the Christmas spirit.

Italy, 1757. Lowly tailor Pippo Popolino disguises himself as the great Casanova in order to romance attractive widow Francesca. He little suspects what he's getting into: locked into the incongruous role by the desperation of the real Casanova's creditors, Pippo must journey to Venice on a delicate mission far beyond his capabilities.

There's Hope For Venice Yet

One of Bob Hope's funnier comedies was Casanova's Big Night which finds tailor's apprentice Hope exchanging places with the great Casanova who is played by Vincent Price in an unbilled cameo.

Casanova's been down on his luck lately and he's beating it out of town owing the butcher, baker, and candlestick maker as well as his valet, Basil Rathbone. But after Dutchess Hope Emerson and her son Robert Hutton catch Hope in Casanova's outfit, Rathbone and the creditors decide to let the ruse continue.

Emerson wants to hire the world's greatest lover to seduce her son's intended, Audrey Dalton, because she feels she's a titled goldigger. True, but that's beside the point. The proof will be if the great lover can steal a certain petticoat with a crest embroidered on it.

The Doge of Venice Arnold Moss and his two scheming aides Raymond Burr and John Carradine also have their doubts that Hope might not be the great Casanova. What could ever give them that idea?

By the way Cassanova's Big Night was unusual for Hope in that he went the entire film without one Crosby joke.

The palace intrigue is as thick as a cement pudding, but Hope manages to bumble through it with the help of Joan Fontaine who is one of the creditors. As is the case in all his films, she develops as a soft spot for old ski nose.

Paramount gave Hope an unusually good supporting cast here and they all perform well. Of course fans of the classics might well recognize that the plot was lifted from The Three Musketeers.

But can you imagine the havoc that three Bob Hopes would have caused Venice?

good tunes, simple guys and a gal who just don't know how to say what she means

Others have captured the story line of this film. The most interesting character is Nick Driscoll, played by tough guy Raymond Burr. Until the green-eyed monster gets him, there is some hope that he will turn out to be a smooth talking gangster with a heart of gold. And, if the truth be told, I was secretly hoping he'd get the girl. Alas, he turns out to be a greedy sob with a patented Burr streak of nastiness. Sinatra gives an all too believable portrayal of a one-dimensional, rags to riches prima dona.

Keep a sharp eye out for Tony Curtis and Jeff Chandler at the Damon Runyon fund raiser. They both looked like they wanted to temporarily step out of their cameo suits and take Danny Wilson backstage and clean his clock for being such an ill-mannered buffoon. Now, that would have been a movie.

Review :

Alastair Sim compensates for a weak film.....

On hearing of this film I was looking forward to watching it. It's the typical 1950's British film, with the added bonus of Alastair Sim. He is brilliant, but the plot is weak. Social matters are highlighted that were common in Britain then, such as the Labour party versus the Tories etc. But the plot doesn't hold together well. Over all a good enough film, but no where near the St. Trinian's series or The Green Man. Watch out for a young George Cole as a soldier as well.
