Review :

A solid adventure yarn.

First, don't confound it with the Tod Browning feature, a silent one, starring the great Lon Chaney. This movie is British and directed by the interesting Harry Watt, who gave us this kind of exotic features, and in a semi documentary style. See for instance, WHERE NO VULTURES FLY, or SIEGE OF PICHGUT. Of course British movie industry was very used to adventures stories, and this till the early sixties. We can analyze that as a sort of reflection of the colonialist history of United Kingdom. That's what I think. And after the fifties we saw the birth of the "Kitchen Sink" way of filming, with such directors as Tony Richardson, Bryan Forbes, Lindsay Anderson and Karel Reisz. The DNA of other film makers like Ken Loach,; the digging into the major social problems of the usual population. But that's another comment. This was not for the same kind of audience.

Back to this film, it is a very good time waster for those who like old fashion movies that we saw in childhood. We can think of KING SOLOMON'S MINES. Ivory hunters who have to fight against natives tribes. Nothing special but worth watching.

One of the best sword and Sandals movies

I am a big fan of these types of movies. I love movies like Ben-Hur, The Greatest Story Ever Told, Samson and Delilah, and Spartacus. The movies that took place in ancient Rome had so much going for them. They had great actors, directors, cinematography, and music. They also never needed to use computer animation. I was always very pleased. Only I can't say I was pleased with the Romans wearing purple and black in Gladiator. But anyway, this movie has it all. There is nothing I can say that's bad about it. It has a great story that pulls you in. When you watch it you feel as if you are there. You feel everything that the actors are feeling and the music helps to set the mood.

Jay Robinson is pretty good as Caligula, but sometimes he is way too over the top. His performance as Caligula was better in Demetrius and the Gladiators. Jean Simmons is a very good actress. I like her a lot in this movie and in Spartacus. I think she deserved some type of recognition. Victor Mature was very good too. Michael Rennie was another good actor in this movie. He seemed so perfect as Peter. The one that stood out was Richard Burton. He did a great job. I could go on and on because the whole cast was great. I read that Tyrone Power was originally approached for the lead. I think he could've pulled it off. He was a very underrated actor.

I have many favorite parts. I love the scene when Victor Mature is trying to find Jesus so he can warn him and he runs into to someone. I won't say who. I like the crucifixion scene. It was very well done and Victor Mature shows his great acting in the scene. I love the scene when Richard Burton finds the robe. He was afraid of it, but when he holds it close it has an effect on him. The ending is outstanding. It is well acted and ends happily. Burton without a doubt deserved his Academy Award nomination. Sometimes he overacts in scenes when he is yelling, but other times he really looks like he belongs in the role. This movie probably didn't win much because there was so much competition. Many other great movies were there. From Here To Eternity, a big favorite of mine, and Shane, another big favorite of mine, were nominated. The actors that were up for it were all favorites of mine too. I can't really decide who deserved it. Burt Lancaster and Montgomery Clift were both great in From Here to Eternity. It's tough for me to choose between those two and Richard Burton.

Everything about this movie is great so be sure to check it out. I can watch it over and over and never get sick of it. Check out this classic, this epic. It has it all. The Robe is a timeless classic. You will not be disappointed.

Review :

Another strong performer by Gabin.

Gloomy and without concessions, this film definitely won't make you happier after watching it, but it's so well made you will probably get into the plot, even with the slow pace and naif styling common in 50's French cinema.

Of course Gabin is a "good guy", tired, tough, but ultimately fair. Even if he's constantly showing he's tired of the job, being badly paid, quite impatient, etc. Needlessly, he steals the movie. The young stars don't disappoint. Maybe Francis is a bit too slick for the age, being sort of a natural leader who never misses a cue. Alain's ingenuity is believable, and that's quite a feat for a child actor. Sylvette is also right on track as the "beautiful working class bitter heroine". The prostitute step mum's treatment is also an interesting character, given she's never given moral lessons or shown "what happens to those people", unlike other films of the epoch. Finally, as usual, no "accompanying music" and a "minimalist" in the sense of austere décor aid for this film's oppressive feeling you get while watching it.

IMDb's pro reviewer "Dumnteil" is accurate as usual when comparing it favourably with the way more famous "400 coups". Enjoy!

The Great Pedro Infante in an Episodic Uneven Film

Completed only a few years before the end of his short life, "La Vida No Vale Nada" earned Pedro Infante a Silver Ariel for Mexico's best male performance of 1955. Infante remains the primary reason to see this episodic, somewhat disjointed film. The Mexican star plays Pablo, an illiterate, alcoholic drifter, who has bouts with the bottle and interludes with several women of varying character: a loving widow, a generous professional, his saintly mother, and his father's lusty mistress. While attractive, Infante does not have stereotypical movie-star looks and is convincing as a common man who struggles with existence. Women play a significant role in Pablo's life and offer him redemption, love, and sex, for which he seems to offer little in return. Although he reunites with his mother, he bonds most closely with his beachcomber father, whose destiny he seems fated to follow.

Fortunately, the movie offers opportunities for Infante to sing, and his voice, rich and velvety in tone, provides another reason to see the film. In two scenes, however, the actor sings while he is supposedly intoxicated. Although enjoyable, these sequences are somewhat incredible because his enunciation and notes are perfect despite his inebriation. That a good-looking man with such a rich voice would have to scratch out a living with odd jobs also stretches the plot's believability.

Although others in the cast perform well, the film is Infante's show, and his charm supports its weaker sections. Rogelio Gonzalez's direction is competent, although the transitions from episode to episode at times leave the viewer wondering if scenes were edited out. The IMDb plot outline for this film bears no relation to "La Vida No Vale Nada" and must refer to another film with the same title. Despite its flaws, this often-entertaining film is a showcase for the talents of one of Mexico's greatest stars. Although the movie is not worthy of his talents, "La Vida No Vale Nada" provides a showcase for the dramatic and vocal skills of the great Pedro Infante.

A Distinguished Pedigree

Let's Do It Again is the third rendition of the play The Awful Truth about an about to be divorced couple who really belong together, but have to wait until the end of the film to find out. Ray Milland and Jane Wyman are the couple repeating the roles that Cary Grant and Irene Dunne had back in 1937 in The Awful Truth.

This started as an Arthur Richman play back in 1922 which ran 144 performances on Broadway with Ina Claire in the lead. So Let's Do It Again has a distinguished pedigree. This version had a musical score attached to it by Lester Lee and Ned Washington, none of the songs you will remember.

Jane Wyman who could sing and dance proves she can again in this film, it's the main reason to see the film. Ray Milland starts off well, as the film opens you see him jamming on the drums at a club while Wyman thinks he's in Chicago. He fakes that pretty good, but when he's called on to sing, it's not his finest hour on the big screen. The main ballad in the film is sung by Dick Haymes on record to Wyman.

She has two suitors for her on the rebound, Tom Helmore and Aldo Ray. Ray is not terribly comfortable in the Ralph Bellamy part, Bellamy played his role in 1937 film. Helmore is a cad, as he many times is on screen.

The distinguished pedigree of Let's Do It Again does not guarantee a top quality product. Overall the film is all right, but there's nothing new that's really good here.
