A well-done movie, I was surprised

I saw this movie on the Westerns Channel and didn't expect much from it. But I was pleasantly surprised as it was well directed, the staging was impressive, the script was thorough and had an intriguing plot. The exterior shots were gorgeous (wonderful country, might have been Wyoming but probably the back lot somewhere.) While only John Derek was truly handsome, the cast selection and action created by the supporting cast makes this movie worth watching. The only bad thing was, Bob Steele shot a man in the back. I was horrified, having seen so many of his movies where he was the good guy. A complete change of character for him. See it.

A rarity well worth seeing

I saw 'After the Curfew' ('Lewat Djam Malam' in the Indonesian) at the 2012 London Film Festival, and it's a real rarity: an Indonesian film from 1953, set just after independence (granted just four years before). A former resistance fighter leaves the jungle and tries to take up the reins of his pre-revolution life, only to grow discouraged that the newly-independent country isn't the people's paradise he had been hoping for. The film is a bit preachy - even propaganda-y - at times; scenes of people enjoying a sing-song at a party go on far too long; and the continuity is a bit ropey (although the action is set over the course of just 24 hours, look carefully and you'll see the hero wears at least four different pairs of socks during it!) But for its novelty value alone this is worth seeing if you get the chance.

So-so melodrama about an oppressive women's college

The Garden of Women is a social commentary on the changing status of women in Japan during the days after World War II. The setting is a women's boarding college in Kyoto where rich families send their daughters. The goal of the school, however, is not so much to provide an education as it is to produce potential brides. In order to produce these results (and to protect the school's reputation) the administrators bury the students with rules and regulations, while also prying into every aspect of their private lives. The end result is that the place feels more like a prison to the students than a school. A number of students decide to fight for their rights, which of course leads to conflict with the school's administrators.

It's hard to complain about a movie with such lofty goals. I imagine there really were schools like this in Japan at the time, and efforts by young women to be seen as equals is of course laudable. Unfortunately, propaganda and social commentary aren't enough to make a good movie, and the end result here is not overly interesting. The storyline is never particularly compelling, the tone is rather strident and the movie is overlong. Even the great Hideko Takamine cannot save it, as she is given little to do other than look sad and break down crying (which she does a lot.) Overall, it might have some historical value to some people, but it is probably too histrionic and dated for most viewers today.

A melodramatic movie with memorable songs

"Aye bad-e-saba ahista chal, yeha soi huyi hai Anarkali": this 1953 version of the legendary romance between Salim and Anarkali is marked timeless by C. Ramachandra's music. Hemanta Kumar and Lata's melodies render the tune of this musical evergreen, and mark the crest and fall of the drama.

The movie is too melodramatic, and unlike the K. Asif's 1960 version (Mughal-E-Azem), the characters lack fortitude. A well-known conflict between the different class of people ends up in Anarkali being buried alive, with "Alvida..." in Lata's haunting voice.

Farewell,Monsieur Grémillon.

That was to be Grémillon's last full-length feature film. After a golden decade (roughly from "Gueule d'Amour" (1937) to the overlooked "Pattes Blanches "(1947) which is perhaps his masterpiece ) there were only two movies: "L'Etrange Madame X " which was an intimate version of "Lumière d'Ete" : the bourgeois society versus the working-class people (cabinet-maker Henri Vidal and unhappy married uptown woman Michèle Morgan). And this movie.

"L'Amour d'une Femme " is a beautiful film.Beautiful but extremely sad, even lugubrious. It features two funerals ,and many many depressing scenes;even the love scenes (with the exception of the one which takes place when the schoolteacher's is dying) are painful, the two lovers talk but they do not communicate:the engineer is an Italian macho -one mistake: dubbing Massimo Girotti was dubious cause he was supposed to have an accent- ;for him,a woman's job is acceptable as soon as she is without a man.But when she gets married ,she becomes a housewife. It was the fifties after all, woman's lib didn't happen yet and Marie who wants to reconcile her work and the love she feels for Andrea ,is too much ahead of her time. The young schoolteacher who replaces Madame Leblanc at the end of the film, will do it,simply because she 's doing a female job (teaching)and her fiancé is her colleague.I hardly exaggerate when I write that there were three jobs for a woman before the sixties: shop assistant or factory girl at worst, nurse or teacher at best. But a female doctor? On the Ouessant Island,In Britanny,Grémillon's native region -where "Pattes Blanches" took place too- where coarse uneducated people live,it's hard to accept that. And even once she's integrated ,the teacher warns her " Beware, people will talk " Marie's job took the best of her,but it gave her independence,pride,self-assurance .But the schoolteacher's death ,which is the turning point of the film ,calls everything into question. What? All that admirable woman did for the others' children,it's already forgotten. Two of the pupils she loved left the funeral to look for their lamb ,no one shed a tear during the ceremony. All that is left is photographs of the mistress ,surrounded by pupils, photographs which will soon turn yellow.

When Madame Leblanc, about to retire, packs her stuff, when the doctor asks herself if her work is finally worthwhile ,we think of the director who knew it was to be his final work.During his last years he had to be content with shorts ,which, for a first-class director such as him ,was certainly a pity, considering the great works he could have still made.He died at 61,prematurely.

A last thing : religion was important in Britanny (still is) and the inhabitants 'life was governed by the rhythm of the services, the vespers, the mass sung in Latin. The only moment when it's not taken seriously takes place after Marcel's operation ,when a drunk verger breaks into "Minuit Chrétiens" (O holy night).

Review :

Melodrama-exploitation in the high seas

"La Nave delle Donne Maledette" (the ship of the damned women) is one of the strangest films that I've ever seen. The only point of comparison that I can find are the wonderful Mexican melodramas of the 50s – films like "Aventurera" and "Victimas del Pecado".

"La nave delle donne maledette" mixes melodrama, WIP, exploitation, sea adventure, love, rage, violence, tears and death. Some scenes look like a wild party - the ship and its human cargo(female prisoners, sailors, captain and several different characters) could very well be a circus tent with clowns and acrobats.

The story takes place in 18th century. In a noble but nearly-ruined family, a girl (Isabella) gets rid of her new-born baby. This is made in secrecy, but the facts become known and the police want to arrest the woman responsible for the crime. The family is anxious to avoid a scandal that would soon be followed by financial ruin. So they manage to convince Consuelo, a poor relation, to take on her shoulders the responsibility for the baby's death. In the judgment she is condemned to 10 years of forced labor in a colony. The sentence is harsh and Consuelo is embarked with other "damned" women, in a ship destined for a distant colony. What now? Consuelo is innocent. She will probably never return – hard work, unhealthy sanitary conditions, poor nutrition, and in the end a shallow grave - there seems to be no hope for Consuelo. Her rich family (in spite of their promises) seems to have forgotten her. Something must happen, but what will happen? I won't tell. Anyway, the voyage is long and things could change in between.

This is a strange film, it's intense and over-the-top, in short, it's like a tornado, and it will leave you staring in disbelief. I would like to see this film in a restored, remastered copy. I don't understand why "La nave delle donne maledette" wasn't given the DVD treatment in Italy. It really deserves it!

In 1870, Yankee sea captain O'Keefe finds himself stranded after a mutiny on the Micronesian island of Yap, where the financial potential of copra (dried cocoanut) excites him. But a German company already has a monopoly...and very low production because hard work is alien to dwellers in paradise. On a later voyage, between affairs with island maidens, O'Keefe struggles to find the key to the wealth of Yap. But before he can carve out the empire of his dreams, he must also contend with assorted villains...

Review :

We all lose ourselves sometimes.

His Majesty O'Keefe is directed by Byron Haskin and adapted to the screen by Borden Chase & James Hill from the novel written by Lawrence Klingman & Gerald Green. It stars Burt Lancaster, Joan Rice, Andre Morell and Abraham Sofaer. Music is by Robert Farnon and Technicolor photography by Otto Heller.

Plot finds Lancaster as Captain David O'Keefe, who after a mutiny is tossed overboard in the South Pacific. Making his way to Yap Island, O'Keefe is pleased to see the money making potential by harvesting copra from the mass coconut growth on the island. However, the natives aren't exactly thrilled by his intentions and there's also some serious German businessmen interested in the island as well. Too many cooks spoil the broth and this once peaceful little island is soon to become a hotbed of greed and division.

It's all very muscular and pretty (actually filmed on location in Fiji), led by a super tanned, white toothy grinned Lancaster, film has a very decent theme at its core, but sadly this mostly get lost in the confusing mixture. Picture never quite settles into being one cohesive whole, at times a wannabe swashbuckling adventure propelled by a South Seas love story, at others an observation of capitalism corrupting the beautiful untapped paradise's of the world. The pace is stop/start, with Haskin (Treasure Island) struggling manfully to make the various strands of the screenplay work, and cast are effective enough in just about retaining viewing Interest.

Worth it for Lancaster fans, and for fans of great choreography and attractive scenery. But it remains a hit and miss affair, it takes an age to make its point but survives ignominy on account of the unusual flavours in the mix. 5/10
